Surfrider Foundation chapter Holland

As a surfer i have always been amazed what comes out of the ocean. At the end of the chain everything ends up in the ocean as waste. But we seem to forget that the beginning of the chain is depending on the ocean as well. So the waste in the end ends up in our own system, our body… This is one of targets the Surf-rider foundation has set to grow awareness for. I have been involved with the surfriderfoundation as a part-part-part timer (still have to find more time to support these guys) to build and maintain their website.

Lately i’m trying to bring down the amount of plastic consumption for my own part. It is amazing to see the reaction of people when you refuse to accept plastic bags because you brought your own bag with you. Still as i look at all the plastic I dispose every day it seems to amaze me every time. Everything is wrapped in plastic nowadays… the question to ask is why!? Why use a product like plastic, while it takes decades to disolve.

Take a look at the website of the surfriderfoundation and help out, change your habits. Help with one of the many cleanups to raise awareness…

Amsterdamgold magazine

We, at my company Terra Preta, have been involved in creating a magazine for our client Amsterdam Gold. The challenge with this magazine was to present a lot of really detailed information with lots of different graphs in a coherent style and in a way that it would be easy scan-able for the reader. I first broke up the content into chapters, which was something that wasn’t there. After that we recreated all the graphs so that they could be coherent in style. Choosing the right typography was also key, for most part i uses Helvetica with a nice line-height which made the content easy to read and for headings i used a serif font to give it a more serious and classic tone. Piecing the whole magazine together was quite a tedious job. We couldn’t endlessly keep adding pages, balance in maximum content per page and the maximum page count had to be found… The end result is something i am quite proud off.

Time Lapse Amsterdam

This was my first real experience with shooting time-lapse movies. I quite like the thing it does with time en how it seems to stretch the time as soon as it gets dark. This time lapse got used in a commercial for the new book of Kluun | haantjes.. initially without me knowing about it which was quite awkward. I found out about it watching a tv show in which this clip was featured. This is a concept i still would like to repeat with different persons making different shapes. This one worked out quite well. Already some years old, i have yet to find the time to work out more of these concepts.

Bringing in new tubes to my ART mpa gold

I read that this would be a great upgrade to my very clean ART mpa gold. So i replaced the el cheapo china tubes for nice Mullards’s. In de next few weeks we will find out how much of an upgrade this is. Changing tubes will never be my hobby though.. You have to press harder than you think to get them in .. keep you posted.

King Crimson remasters and 5.1 mix

Last week I received one of my favorite albums in the new remastered edition with the 5.1 dvd audio mix. Not knowing if this would be a contribution to my already big collection of King Crimson records, i was curious to find out if it did.

It turned out to be a quite nice contribution. The remastering is done in a way that it shows great respect to the old work and sound. The 5.1 mix is a really nice piece of work which lets you hear some more detail of the work. It is like being able to peel off the layers of craftsmanship to find just another beautiful painting underneath. It is nice to see two of my favorite musicians (Fripp and Wilson) work together on this with great respect for the old (1969) work.

Studio 2006

Back in 2006 I started renting a space for building a recording studio. I had a contract for 4 years, after that it would be unsure if we would be able to stay there. In 2011 we received word that we would be able to stay for at least another 10 years. So we began building a extra room which would become the control room of the studio. We are now at the final stages of rebuilding the studio and already able to record music again. At this time i am recording numerous projects and will soon post samples of the projects on my website. The picture in this post is the old studio which was staged with gear in just one room.
